As fans get prepared for another round of exciting matches coming up in the Women Super League on Sunday, let us do a detailed analysis of this weekend's round of fixtures.
The biggest tie this weekend is set to go down on Sunday as Chelsea Women host league leaders Manchester United at the Kingsmeadow stadium.
Cassey Stoney's Manchester based team who are officially into their second season in the top-flight division sit top of the rankings with 26 points from 10 matches, three points clear of the defending champions, Chelsea and having played a game more. Cassey's side, one of the two unbeaten teams this season have made a meteoric rise in the last 3 years - the club won the championship title at the end of the 2018–19 season enroute their promotion to the Barclays FA Super Women's League and finished 4th in their first season in the top-flight which was the 2019-20 season. Now in their 3rd year of official existence, they will be focused on making a very strong statement for the title as they head into the weekend's fiercely contested battle against the defending champions who are also yet to lose a game this season. Emma Hayes' side head into this side after the 5 nil hammering of a decent Reading side last weekend.
However, there are some concerns about the fitness of some United players having not played at all this year due to an outbreak of Covid19 at the club recently with their last match being the 6-1 victory over Bristol City on the 20th of December, 2020. Yet, Sunday's top-of-the-table clash offers a lot of intrigues and could have a big input on deciding the title race. It is definitely one of the matches to watch out for in Europe this weekend.
Elsewhere, third placed Arsenal will be hoping to continue their impressive goalscoring trend and results against teams outside the top 4 as they host a Reading side that collapsed last weekend against the Blues. Arsenal won the reverse fixture 6-1. Reading must be prepared for an uphill task against the free scoring Arsenal attack spearheaded by the competition's record all-time topscorer, Vivienne Miedema.
At the Academy Stadium in Manchester, last season's runners-up, Manchester City host Aston villa. The Villans fight for survival could take another blow if they lose to a side that haven't lost a league game in 3 months. The Citizens are presently on a 5-game unbeaten streak and the only defeat they have suffered this season was against Chelsea back in October, 2020.
Birmingham City continue to search for their first home win of the season when they welcome Brighton and Hove Albion to the Damson Park on Sunday. Brighton are two places and a point below Birmingham. Both sides head into this tie with a bad run of form with Birmingham City losing their last 2 matches and Brighton losing their last three.
Also in the WSL, Tottenham Hotspur will be out to make it 3 wins out of their last 3 games when they square off against Westham at the Victoria Road in a London Derby affair on Sunday.
Lastly in the WSL this weekend, Everton play against the only winless team in the WSL's 2020-21 season, Bristol City who are engrossed in a relegation battle having amassed just 2 points from a possible 30. Time is clearly running out for The Vixens whose top-flight status is in serious doubt. Another loss against Everton will compound their woes and worsen their situation. Hence, they need to keep it tight at the back and not ship in more goals as they have the worst defensive record in the division conceding an average of 4.5 goals per match; a total of 45 goals conceded in 10 matches. However, a victory could see Everton close the gap on the top 4 placed teams if results elsewhere go in their favour.
